No Guns, No Knives, No Personal Checks - The Tales of a San Francisco Cab Driver by Larry Sager (Everett Madison Publishing); Original Trade Paperback; $14.95) has won the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award for the Best First Book (Fiction). Awards were presented May 31, 2007, on the eve of BookExpo America in New York City, at which time winners were recognized for setting the standards and pace for the publishing industry.

The Benjamin Franklin Awards are sponsored by PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association and celebrate editorial and design excellence for titles published in 2006. Judges for the Benjamin Franklin Awards come from all areas of the industry: major newspaper and trade media reviewers, bookstore and library buyers and reviewers, non-competing publishers, artists and writers who serve the industry.

No Guns, No Knives, No Personal Checks is a comical, witty and suspenseful tale of contrasting characters -- from the rich and the poor, to the sorry and the psychotic. It is a whirlwind tour exploring the underbelly of the most dangerous job in the United States. Drug dealers, gang members, French tourists, hookers, derelicts, transvestites, muggers, and even other cab drivers share intimate snippets of their lives. Sometimes a snippet is too much. The book contains a dozen black & white illustrations by Shanon Essex, including a map of San Francisco, and an amusing Cab Driver’s Glossary of terms. As the Midwest Book Review writes: “Hard-hitting, authentic vignettes…a fun must.” The Onion agrees: "...funny and frightful tales...."

During the daylight hours of the mid-90s, Larry Sager pursued a B. A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State, but only after penning the fresh experiences driving the night shift for Yellow Cab. That nocturnal ritual provides immediacy and gripping detail to the book. One selection “The Highest Bidder” was published in the Seattle literary publication Lit Rag. While earning his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, Sager’s other published work appeared as articles in books and journals. For two years as Senior Contributing Editor of the Res Gestae newspaper, he wrote regularly featured columns on newsworthy and current events.
